1. Rationale for the fair:   This our second annual Illinois Renewable Energy Fair. We believe it is necessary for an Illinois fair, until now, Illinois residents had to travel out of state to energy fairs in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan to become more familiar with a full range of renewable energy products and services, to discuss those services with knowledgeable providers, and to interact with others already using such systems. At these fairs, they have the opportunity to attend educational sessions which provide them with essential understandings needed to make renewable energy an integral part of their lives. When they return to Illinois, these individuals often have difficulty finding local providers of renewable energy services, and are therefore thwarted in their attempts to implement renewable energy in their own lives. Their major concern is who will be readily available to service their systems if problems arise.

2. Objectives:   The fair will address this situation by focusing on Illinois resources to meet our objectives:

  • To inform Illinois residents of the renewable energy resources available to them within the state;
  • To establish a network of Illinois residents interested in supporting and implementing renewable energy in their own lives;
  • To connect Illinois residents with local and regional sources of renewable energy products and services;
  • To facilitate information exchanges between these residents and suppliers.

3. Audience:   We hope to attract about 5,000 people to the fair this year, we had nearly 1,500 last year.. Since the fair is directed at Illinois residents, most would come from Illinois - primarily from north of I-80; most will probably be green suburbanites and farmers, some urban.

4. Publicity:   We plan to advertise through Public Radio and Public Television, since we have done so in the past and have had success with them. Also, we've been informed that their summer programming will focus on renewable energy. We have taped a half hour public tv program on the fair and expect it to be aired statewide. Commonwealth Edison has agreed to insert an announcement in their July billing, which will alert all C.E. customers, which covers much of northern Illinois and the suburbs. We will send public service announcements to northern Illinois newspapers and tv stations. We have also advertised through the Solar Access web site and Home Power magazine.
